THE CITY OF MOMBASA  

The Swahili women in bright colored printed cotton sheet called a Kanga, which may have inspirational slogans printed at the back walking majestically around the coast and the city of Mombasa which is the second largest in Kenya. Lying on the coast of Indian Ocean Mombasa like other coast of East Africa was predominated by Arabs of Middle East and Indian sub-continent. The population of the city is approximately 1.2 million dominated by Muslim. The main dressing for women is the baibui, which is black and

coves the head and men wears kikoi. Traditionally Mombasa was part of the state of Zanzibar until 12 December 1963 when it was ceded to be incorporated into the newly independent Republic of Kenya. The city has a warm tropical climate and winter months are slightly warmer.

The astonish beaches of Tiwi, Shelly and Diani to the south of the town and Shanzu, Nyali, Kenyatta, and Bamburi to the north are the place to visit and have the beach vacation in Mombasa after a safari to the National park or a climb to Mountain Kenya. Other famous places to visit around the town include the Fort Jesus and Old town. The Old town comprises with the

old historical houses and shops build in Islamic architecture. The Fort Jesus was built by Portuguese during the colonial era in year 1593 for protection purpose. Intruders from Europe did frequently fight for the territory until Britain took over and turn the building to a prison, spices, gold, ivory and slaves gateway. In the year 1958 the Fort was declared a monument house that today houses a museum. Today the Fort has a vast collection of archaeological findings, which is a popular destination for foreign and local tourists receiving hundreds of visitors a year.
